THE STORY:

VIEQUES HUMANE SOCIETY & ANIMAL RESCUE INC wrote -

For so many unwanted dogs, the journey from street survival to loving forever homes is long. Sadly, not every dog makes it…

It takes more veterinary treatment, vaccines, food/sheltering supplies, parasite control, and daily care than currently available. More than that, it takes persistence, compassion, and generosity…it takes YOU to make this work possible.

May marks tourist season’s end & fewer donations. With sufficient funds VHSAR could treat and re-home every shelter dog in 2015. Please help us get EVERY unwanted litter and abandoned street dog ready to “go home”...

Vieques is a small island off the Puerto Rican mainland. Annually, our shelter accepts more surrendered/abandoned dogs than our facility can house. In 2014 we accepted 267 dog surrenders. In January 2015, we had 19 surrenders on one day alone. To avoid euthanasia, we partner with foster and adoption organizations in the continental U.S. and transport dogs to forever homes off the island. Our “Get Them Ready for Forever Love” campaign will allow us to expand this program by providing the necessary funds to pay for maintenance and preparation of more healthy animals for transport. This includes: veterinary care, nutrition, spay-neuter, parasite control, required disease testing (heartworm and ehrlichia testing and purchase of “4 IDEXX SNAP” test kits), and treatment of detected diseases prior to transport. VHS will do 500+ free dog spay/neuters in 2015 and is committed to 100% re-homing if we have sufficient funds.

Without your generosity, our dream of accepting and treating more animals, finding more forever homes, and decreasing euthanasia is not possible. But TOGETHER we can make a difference. Please help...

Action items:

  • Develop new relationships with foster and adoption organizations in the continental U.S. who will accept our animals and run adoption events (at times this requires underwriting some of the transport expenses)
  • Step-up the ratio of animals prepared for transport and adoption with existing foster and adoption partners in the continental U.S.
  • Bring a vet to Vieques one day per week to provide healthcare services specifically for shelter animals: to include spay/neuter, heartworm treatment, vaccines, medical care as necessary for injured and abused animals brought to the shelter--in order to prepare them for adoption.
  • Purchase supplies for required health testing (e.g. 4 IDEXX SNAP test kits, heartworm testing, erhlichia), innoculations, and antibiotic treatments prior to transport
  • Pay for travel certificates and travel kennels, shampoos, heartworm and tick preventative medication
  • Keep shelter parasite free to avoid tick-born diseases and other parasite-related diseases
  • Feed and shelter animals while awaiting transport to adoption and foster organizations

REMEMBER: Without your generosity, our dream of accepting and treating more animals, finding more forever homes, and decreasing euthanasia is not possible. But TOGETHER we can make a difference. Please help...
