My name is Vicki August and I am a 56 year old wife, mother and grandmother from Valley, Nebraska. My entire life changed on April 13, 2012 when I had a total gastrectomy(removal of the entire stomach). I went to the emergency room on March 1, 2012 with chest pain. I had a heart attack May 1, 2010 and knew what that pain felt like. After a complete examination my cardiologist said "It's not your heart, let's do an endoscopy". What they found was completely unexpected. I had a small red spot towards the upper part of my stomach close to my esophagus that they decided to biopsy. The day I received the phone call telling me that I had stomach cancer was unbelievable. I had lost my Dad and paternal Grandmother both to stomach cancer many years ago. My dreams had just come true when I became a Grandmother on Jan 10th to my first grandson Colby and then again on March 28th with twin grandsons Daniel and Dawson. Why was this happening now? I had the surgery April 13, 2012 and spent 8 weeks in the hospital with multipal complications. The only way that I made it through those 56 days was by having my wonderful husband by my side almost every hour and also my beautiful Mother and sister Susie. My sons brought their babies to the hospital for the entire 8 weeks so I could watch the babies grow and see them change. It's now been 18 months since my surgery and I am still recovering. It has been a long hard road but I am blessed to have such a wonderful, caring family who encourage me every day. It is possible to live without a stomach but it's not easy! I thank the good Lord every day for giving me a second chance.
The walk will be held Saturday, November 2nd from 10:00am until noon at the DC West High School Gymnasium in Valley, Nebraska. There will be plenty of coffee, hot chocolate and breakfast treats. We will also be having a raffle with many great items items available! Please join us and show your support.
My goal is to raise awareness and educate people about this horrible cancer. Money raised will go towards stomach cancer research and education.
