In May of 2011 I had what I thought was a flu bug of some sort. Over the next few weeks my body started experiencing some very strange and difficult symptoms. Extreme fatigue , heaviness in my arms and legs, and eventually numbness. My symptoms seemed to get worse with each passing day. It was a very crazy time, going through tests, bloodwork and more tests. The tests were not conclusive and having no answers was very hard on me and my family.
On July 25, 2011 at the University of Michigan, I was diagnosed with Transverse Myelitism a rare neuro auto immune disease that affectes 3 to 8 people in a million. There are no definate answers as to why this happened. My immune system went hay wire and caused inflamation that attacked the myelinin sheath that protects the nerves in the cervical area of my spine. The damage caused has caused many residual symptoms the continue to affect me today.
I've had to make a lot of adjustments over the past two years. Many of these have been life changing and difficult. I've walked through days of fear, depression, and questions. My family, friends, church, co-workers and even strangers have loved and cared for me so well. The prayers of so many people have been so appreciated. I'm so thankful for all the support I've received!
I'm learning to listen to my body, and respond to what it needs each day. My heart breaks for my TM friends who struggle so much more than I do. It's especially difficult to see the precious little children who suffer with this disease.
In all of this journey, I remain HOPE FILLED and believe that there will be healing, restoration, and a cure for all who suffer with neurological diseases.
The Michigan Walk/Run/Roll will raise funds badly needed for research. We also hope to educate and raise awareness. This will be a fun day for all as we walk, run or roll together in support and HOPE!
