Victim of an unscrupulous so-called friend
Organized by: Tobey Garner
I've been disabled since 2005 after a back surgery left me unable to work. While I now receive disability, it's only $848 a month. I made an arrangement with a friend to clean his house twice a week, in exchange for him paying my electric bill, which averages $150-200 a month. Last week I received a disconnect notice in the mail for a little over $4800. I was shocked! When I called the power company, I was informed that he hasn't made a payment in two years and if I wanted to keep my electric on, I would have to pay them $1200 by June 13th. Needless to say, I don't have that. I've called every agency looking for some help and there's nothing out there. The energy assistance program doesn't even allow you to apply until July 1st, apparently I'm not eligible for emergency assistance because my daughter isn't on my food stamp case (she's 20, and had her own when she came to stay with me 8 months ago). Most of my area churches won't have funds until the end of the month. My daughter is a brittle diabetic with severe asthma but since she's not on life support, the electric company doesn't care. They won't even wait the 2 1/2 weeks until I can apply for energy assistance. My bill (before I trusted my friend) was always paid, every month. Because of what he did, I've been extremely stressed, I can't sleep stomach is in constant knots. I can't do much of anything legally to my so-called friend because it was a verbal agreement. If you can find it in your heart to donate $1, $5, $10, whatever your able to, I would be extremely and forever grateful.
