In 2000 the United Nations established the Millenium Development Goals, which are development targets to improve poverty and basic human rights worldwide. Goal 5 is to “reduce by three quarters, between 1990 and 2015, the maternal mortality ratio.” Maternal mortality is 100-fold higher in Sub-Saharan Africa, with 1 of 39 women dying in childbirth. Post-partum hemorrhage is the leading cause and it results from poor access to high quality medical care, including transfusion support.

A recent study found that lack of blood transfusion support likely contributes to 26% of these deaths. The goal of this project is to create an infrastructure to improve blood transfusion support at a major hospital in Uganda. By working with the hospital administrators, clinicians and blood supplier, I will address aspects of product supply, storage and preparation, and laboratory, nursing and medical staff education.

I am a trained blood bank physician with a background in global medicine. Money raised will go towards education of blood bank and clinical staff in Uganda and the setup of necessary infrastructure. The money will fund two 3-week training periods during which local staff will be trained to maintain all day to day functions of the project. I will remain involved in monitoring beyond the initial setup through follow-up visits to the hospital.
