About White Shield Center
The Salvation Army White Shield Center’s mission is “Empowering adolescent girls to lead healthy and productive lives in their families and communities.” We are a a residential treatment center for adolescent girls through two programs: Wildflowers – adolescent girls facing emotional/behavioral challenges;and Parenting – serving adolescent girls who are pregnant or parenting a young child 0-3 years of age. All girls in the programs are in State custody; the majority have been marginalized.
Approximately 100 girls, infants and toddlers are served annually. Typically, there are approximately 25 girls residing in the program at once, with up to 16 infants and toddlers living on campus with their teen moms.
The White Shield Centerhas been located in Northwest Portland since 1917. Our treatment philosophy maintains that individuals will make positive changes for themselves when provided with the appropriate teaching, support and opportunity to do so. Using evidence-based practices, clients are provided a “treatment team” approach that offers culturally competent, gender-specific services that are individualized to address the specific needs of each girl.
White Shield Center is located at 2640 Northwest Alexandra Ave., Portland, Oregon 97210.

2011 VIP Day Projects
Volunteers will participate in 2 projects at White Shield: (1) Winter gardening preparation, including planting of winter vegetables and spring bulbs, garden area clean-up and potting plants for the new greenhouse at WS; (2) Helping to construct natural playscapes for the toddlers, in which nature, plants, trees and natural materials are the foundations for a play area. An example task might be to create a willow branch tunnel.
Number of Volunteers Requested: 15
This project and JLP’sinvolvement at the White Shield Center bring a sense of community to girls who have often been isolated or marginalized. It provides them with a point of reference so they can learn to engage in community in a way that contributes to the greater good andan opportunity to observe healthy women engaged in community/civic activities.
If you'd like to bring along friends to volunteer, please email VIPDay@juniorleagueofportland.org with their names, email addresses, T-shirt sizes and project they're volunteering for to register them. We will be confirming volunteer registrations via email starting October 7.
In-Kind Donation Requests: outdoor: rakes, shovels, hand tools for weed pulling and gardening, gardening gloves, gardening knee pads, pots and potting soil for the greenhouse. Gardening tools do NOT have to be new, so we can use whatever tools you may have lying around your garage, as long as they are in working condition. We also need vegetable seedlings, such as Herbs, greens, head lettuce, tomatoes, onions, garlic, broccoli, cucumbers, carrots and cauliflower for the greenhouse and winter vegetable beds.
Please contact VIPDay@juniorleagueofportland.org if you are able to donate any of the above items from the in-kind donation request list. Thank you!!
