I was part of a fund raising event for melanoma research 5 years ago. I hated every second of it. I swore I would never, ever, ever fundraise for ANYTHING again.
Every Thursday I walk into Floating Hospital for Children as a massage therapist with Lucy's Love Bus. I work with kids who are being treated for cancer and sickle cell disease. And before you think to yourself - Isn't that difficult? Isn't that sad?
Let me assure you, there's no place else I'd rather be. I am in the presence of bravery, courage, and grit.
These children in clinic come to the treatment room smiling. They smile while simultaneously pulling along their infusion poles; adjusting their lines as they get on the massage table (or are lifted up because they are too little to do so on their own). And as we prepare a plan to best accommodate their needs for that visit and they begin to settle in, I look at them in awe. Whether we are attempting to decrease pain, reduce nausea, alleviate anxiety, or just simply being - these moments and exchanges are both powerful and healing.
For others who are in-patient, I go to see them in their rooms. On many occasions I've been with kids whose pain is so severe they have difficulty answering questions. Yet, even the slightest act of touch can bring their pain down to a place where they can find comfort, dialogue can begin, and they are able to focus on something other than the pain.
The kids I have seen at Be Well are funded by Lucy's Love Bus. The following is a testimonial from one mother:
"My daughter was diagnosed with a high grade glioblastoma in 2014. She was 17 years old at the time. After surgery, radiation and while enduring months of chemotherapy Ginny Vickers provided months of weekly massage therapy for her. Week after week, she would arrive nauseous, tense and afraid. In 60 minutes she would emerge a quietly serene young woman. She would look better and feel better for a solid 48 hours…which when going through chemo is akin to a mini vacation."
And as I drive home to my children who are blessed with good health, my other kids at Floating and Be Well have already taken up residence in my heart...
There is truth to the saying, "It takes a village."
Please be part of this and help us to continue to bring these much needed integrative therapies to our kids.
