THE STORY:

We need your help to launch Virginia Donkey Rescue (VDR). Our mission is to prevent donkey neglect, abuse and abandonment in the State of Virginia and to keep donkeys from ending up at auctions and kill pens. Virginia’s donkeys are facing an increasing risk of ending up in kill pens, where they are shipped out of the country for slaughter as meat or to the donkey hide trade. This risk is growing as the coyote population in the state is exploding. Farmers seeking to protect their livestock investment, place donkeys with cattle, sheep, and goats as guardians. However, this can lead to many unfortunate issues for the donkeys, the livestock and the owners when it’s not monitored and managed properly and the donkeys aren’t trained. The donkeys are often neglected because they can’t be handled and male donkeys that are left intact result in uncontrolled breeding. This population of miss-managed donkeys can lead to neglect, abandonment, abuse, and often sales at auctions where they end up at kill pens. Virginia Donkey Rescue’s (VDR) primary mission is to try to prevent this from happening in the first place. We plan to do this through education and outreach by providing future and current donkeys owners and animal welfare groups with information, resources and assistance - such as low or no cost gelding. When surrender is the only viable option, VDR will take the donkeys into our care until they can be placed as pets with approved adopters. Our services are available to all donkey owners in the state, regardless of their situation. To learn more about us, our mission and goals, please read our Business Plan Summary and visit our website at www.VirginiaDonkeyRescue.org. To accomplish our mission, we first need to become a nonprofit organization (NPO) which requires filing Articles of Incorporation with the state ($175 - done), applying for non-profit status with the IRS ($400 pending), then registration with the state as a nonprofit ($100 pending). There are other administrative costs to run the business as transparently as possible, and marketing costs to start our website, database, email marketing tools, and all the other little things required to start and run any business. As we raise the funds funds needed to accomplish each step, we will be able to move forward to the next step. We've also had quite a bit of press already that has led to several requests for castration/gelding services. Contributions are not tax deductible until our 501c3 status has been approved by the IRS. However, through your contribution we will be able to move forward with our mission in the meantime. You can make a contribution in several ways: • Crowdrise - use the links here, there is a small fee to cover credit card processing costs. • Mail - mail checks to Virginia Donkey Rescue, 414 Stonewall Road, Concord VA 24538. Thank you so much for your support of the donkeys! Together we can make a difference and change their lives for the better.
