Have you ever wished for something so bad your heart hurt? Since I was old enough to walk, every birthday wish and prayer I asked for a cure for my brother Chucky. No cure arrived, but I have found hope and a plan. For after years of painful trial and error, we realized that my brother thrived in the structured life on a farm. And I’m writing to ask for your help to send 30 people like Chucky to school in our refurbished barn by next spring!
My brother Chucky was a cute autistic child who grew into a self-injurious teenager and now young adult. We wrapped him in an air mattress for his own safety and watched him 24/7. We carried on until we couldn’t, and finally had to send Chucky to an out-of-state institution. Our isolation and despair was intense as we fought 5 years to bring him home and if things couldn’t get worse our Dad died unexpectedly 6 months after he was home. Help seemed impossible – until he had the opportunity to work on a farm one summer.
Watching my brother and others like him thrive in this setting gave me a renewed sense of hope – for his future, and ours. And with the incredible support from people like you in the community, we started an organization and bought a farm!
Homesteads for Hope was founded in 2013 and since August 2016 we have a forever home and we are creating a unique Community Farm. A place of effortless inclusion where people of all abilities can learn, work, live and grow. But we need your help to get the barn in working shape before spring! A donation of $25 helps buy seeds and prep the land for our first planting. A gift of $50 provides a farm tool set for a student. A gift of $100 creates a raised garden. And a gift of $200 or more supports the greenhouse classroom fund. Additional donations above that goes to our capital campaign to pay off the mortgage and revitalize the infrastructure.
We have big plans for our beautiful 55-acre farm on the Erie Canal. But first we need your help to rehab the barn and prep the grounds so that we can welcome students like Chucky next spring. Without such amazing community support from friends like you, we would never have gotten this far. Your gift will allow us to prepare the barn for classes and training, because people like my brother Chucky are ready to live to the best of their abilities.
I can barely contain my excitement when I think about what your support will help us achieve. Can you imagine an inclusive and working farm where people of all abilities find work, meaning and hope? It is all I think about, and because of friends like you it will soon become a reality! Since August – we have made tremendous progress with the help of over 150 volunteers, and hundreds of hours of donated skilled trade hours to clean up the farm! We have plans for a variety of community classes, skilled vocational training, a general store and so much more! We have had such momentum in a short amount of time, and can’t wait to show you what your support has made possible come spring! & if you dont beleive me- even Ty Pennington thinks so! Check it out

*P.S. I made a promise to Chucky that I wouldn’t quit until I created a forever home for him and his new friends. Your gift of $500+ will ensure the hammers keep swinging this winter as we prepare the barn for our first wave of students eagerly awaiting their chance to demonstrate all of their abilities.
