BENEFITING: US Association for UNHCR
EVENT DATE: Aug 10, 2011
There is an immediate need for additional funding to address the famine in Somalia and wider food crisis in the Horn. Voice for Somalia is an advocacy group actively addressing the crisis in three ways: by raising awareness of the famine and needed response through social and traditional media, raising funds for the UNHCR and Save the Children, and by pressing public figures to step up and lend their voices to those who have no voice. Voice for Somalia is a vital and unique connection between those at home and those abroad, and we will use our new platform to bring attention to all aspects of life in Somalia. We need your help and your voice.
On Saturday September 3rd 2011, students and communities in North America will convene in Washington DC, Minneapolis, Nairobi, Seattle, San Diego, Columbus, Toronto, Edmonton and Vancouver for a global awareness conference that is designed to fund raise, educate, empower as well as highlight the work of the UNHCR and Save the Children. Our goal is to raise $10,000 per city, with a grand total target of $100,000. Proceeds will be going to the UNHCR and Save the Children. During this event we will showcase a documentary that underlines the poverty, drought and change in climate that has all contributed to the fragile situation in the region. This will be followed up by a panel discussion with several community leaders, as well as critical thinkers. Our aim is to raise funds and more importantly increase public awareness on the plight of the drought stricken people in Somalia and the complexities of the issues. Throughout and leading up to the event we will be fund raising through the use of social media, PSA's and many charities. We need to stand up, come together, make our voices be heard and put an end to the huger and suffering in Somalia.
