Hey. Remember last summer when I volunteered at Willie Mae Rock Camp For Girls? Of course you do—I haven't shut up about it since. WMRC is the greatest place on earth. I got to be a counselor to a group of teenagers, lead a workshop, and become part of the most amazing, fulfilling, head-banging organization that ever existed. The Austin Statesman even wrote an article about Rock Camp and used one of my quotes:
Fury makes no apologies for getting emotional at the rocking girls at her camp. "Oh please, I get teary as soon as I see them get on-stage and pick up their instrument or sit behind the drum kit," she said. "They've got this newfound confidence that kills me. Ever see an 8-year-old do a Pete Townshend windmill? It's nuts. It's overwhelming. I never want it to end."
Highlights from previous showcases included:
**Little kids writing and performing hip-hop lyrics like "N-Y-P-D! Why you wanna mess wit me?!"
**Bands with names like Strawberry Spleen and 2 Legit.
**The band of 8-year-olds who broke up on stage at the showcase immediately following their performance.
**The 18-year-old Jennifer Hudson lookalike whose dream was to be on American Idol begrudgingly gave up the mic to sit behind the drum kit ... and discovered that she could play the drums. Like, really, really well. She left camp declaring that she was getting a kit as soon as she got home.
**The temporary Tofurkey and lavender unicorn tattoos I got at camp that were plastered to my skin for half the summer.
Camp was Utopia, as far as I could tell. I'm asking you to donate again this year. Need more convincing? Watch the new video.
Thank you all so much.
