For 15 years, the Voorhees Theatre Company has worked to establish a vibrant theater community in Voorhees and surrounding towns in Southern New Jersey. Founded as a non-profit community theatre dedicated to providing performance and technical opportunities for children, the company has expanded steadily, now offering musical theatre performance opportunities for performers of all ages, young adult productions, and a summer theatre program for kids in grades three to eight, as well as master classes, continuing education classes, 24-hour and 7-hour theatre programs, open-mic nights, and cabarets.
We would like the opportunity to remove any barriers to participation for the cast of young adults. We want to engage in the A Community Thrives Challenge to raise funds -- and, we hope, be awarded a grant -- that will allow us to waive our standard $100 participation fee for participants. It’s our hope that no-cost participation for performers, combined with our expanded outreach efforts, will attract a more diverse pool of performers to our program.
Studies have shown that participation in the arts strengthens communities by building interpersonal ties and promoting volunteering, which improves health; by increasing opportunities for self-expression and enjoyment; and by enhancing individual abilities to work with others and communicate ideas. We believe theatre can make the world a better place, and we want to continue doing it in South Jersey
