Of all the books I've written and edited, the one of which I'm the most proud is Inside This Place, Not of It. We incarcerate so many people in this country, so many of them for the most minor of offenses, and almost all in the most dismal of conditions. The people who shared their stories tell me again and again that the very act of telling their story and finding an audience who cares what happened to them has changed their lives in deep and meaningful ways. I hope that it's also changed the way many of us think of people in prison, giving a human face to that vast, faceless mass.
