BENEFITING: Nourish International
Chapters: Vanderbilt & Virginia Tech
Partner Organization: Mayan Families
This year, the Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech Chapters will return for a second year of partnership with Mayan Families to invest in the development of a preschool education program for indigenous children in the rural Guatemalan village of Panajachel. The program will provide an opportunity for children to develop inquisitive and educational skills that will last a lifetime.
Currently, the majority of youth in the region speak the traditional Mayan language of Kaqchickel rather than Spanish. The primary aim of the preschool education program is to foster the understanding and speaking of the Spanish language among young villagers in rural Panajachel, Guatemala in order to foster their integration into mainstream Guatemalan society.
The Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech Nourish International chapters are working furiously to raise awareness and funds in order to implement the program in the most successful manner possible. ""Success"" will be measured through ongoing discussions with Mayan Families staff members and Guatemalan students involved with the program. Our long-term goal is to provide the Panajachel youth with the tools they need to become active participants in mainstream Guatemalan society."
We are currently in our second year of partnership with Mayan Families and are excited to invest in and implement another Project with them this summer!
Mayan Families provides opportunities and assistance to the indigenous and impoverished people of Guatemala through education and community development programs. They operate on the principle that all people should have access to the basic necessities of life. They strive to accomplish their goals through working democratically with the communities they serve.
The organization takes pride in the fact that a significant majority of our donations comes from individual donors like you. They are not government funded and do not rely on large grants to carry out their work.
Check out what they said about our work last year!
