About Mary’s Place
Mary’s Place performs as a living room for those who don’t have a place to live. They offer group events daily that range from knitting and quilting bees, to exercise classes, and discussions about housing. Marty Hartman, Executive Director of Mary’s Place, has been there since the very beginning. And she’s witnessed the sacrifices parents make to support their children’s futures. Hartman has seen families stake out parks to sleep in opposite their children’s schools in order to ensure their kids receive an education—their ticket out of poverty.
Hartman has seen the number of homeless families rise due to unexpected issues such as divorce, illness, and unemployment. According to her, homelessness is neither a long-term affliction, nor something that has a socially designated target. Rather, it’s something that can strike any of us at any time.
“Most families will be homeless but once in their lives,” says Hartman. “It’s manageable but you can’t get out of it without the support of your community.”
