About Northwest Harvest
With just 67 cents, Northwest Harvest can purchase a meal for an entire family, making it easy for everyone to contribute. Shelley Rotondo, CEO of Northwest Harvest, recalls how a few years back a bedraggled stranger walked into Northwest Center with a bedroll on his back. He reached into his pocket and pulled out 27 cents. Then he handed it to a nearby volunteer. “He was a donor!” exclaims Rotondo. “He was giving back to his community.”
Because Northwest Harvest’s overhead is so low donations can go a long, long way. The majority of funds received go toward food that is diverse, nutritious and ample, with two thirds in the form of fruits and vegetables. A decade ago Northwest Harvest introduced the Three Squares Backpack Program to 50 schools, providing special foods to high-risk students. What’s so special about “special food?” Rotondo explains, “It’s nutritious, kids like it, and they can prepare it all on their own. They can even carry it home in their backpack.”
