BENEFITING: PROJECT CONCERN INTERNATIONAL
EVENT DATE: Apr 28, 2012
PCI's annual Walk for Water acknowledges the UN-sanctioned World Water Day. Walkers are encouraged to carry buckets of water along the 5k path, simulating the journey made by millions in developing countries every day.
This event is held to raise awareness about the global water crisis and to offer local conservation tips and advice. PCI is committed to helping improve the lives of the more than 1.1 billion people who do not have access to clean, potable water. Around the world, the burden of collecting water most commonly falls to women and girls, who typically spend at least six hours a day walking to water sources and carrying 44 pounds containers over extreme distances. The lack of access to clean drinking water leads to disease, absence from school and work, sickness and death. In fact, waterborne diseases are the responsible for more deaths than WAR and are the leading killer for children under the age of five.
