WA Firefighter's Medical Expenses
Organized by: deleted deleted
As a career firefighter providing public service I never thought I'd need public assistance. I injured my lungs on a forest fire in Wenatchee WA 2015 & I learned I have chronic Hepatitis C. So far L&I work comp denied claim leaving me without income for the past 3 months. I'm contagious to the public and other Firefighters, now ACA insurance denied coverage of the prescribed medicine Harvoni that has 99% cure rate for my case despite 2 specialist doctors and manufactuter's advocacy. If I try other treatments and they fail the effectiveness of subsequently using Harvoni is eliminated, i.e. no cure I die and probably pass the virus on to others before expiration. I'm not an IV drug user, I don't engage in Hep C risk behaviors, I don't even drink and I dont smoke, and I've passed all drug tests including a recent insurance company drug screen. While the source of infection is irrelevant, I got it either helping someone with the virus or from a hospital. HARVONI costs $31,000 per month, $1200 per pill and both doctors prescribed 3 months. As time passes without treatment my expiration date draws closer and the increased chance for cancers. This disease is dangerous and completely curable for many, but for my condition only with Harvoni treatment. This virus is nasty in that it can live outside the body for days resulting in innocent exposure, and some science journals claim mosquitos can now pass it. Thank you.
