Sadly, on the evening of April 5th 2015, the Garifuna Dabuyaba (temple) in Barranco Village was set afire and burned to the ground leaving nothing but ashes. This tragedy affects the entire indigenous Garifuna Nation. The Dabuyaba is the strongest manifestation of Garifuna spirituality in our community. It is where we gather as family , receive spiritual guidance, hold important meetings, and celebrate life with the Ancestors in sacred ceremony. Reverence for Ancestors and respect for elders is central to holding the Garifuna community together. Our strong spiritual connection with past generations is symbolized by the spiritual ceremonies of the chugú and dügü, both of which are essential to our continuity and must take place in a Dabuyaba. These two ceremonies include days of healing and communing with family, extended families, and the Ancestors in the spiritual world. We have a one such ceremony, a dugu, scheduled for the first week in August, and we have no Dabuyaba. Launching this fundraising campaign however is where we have hope, and we ask your help in making it happen. Your financial contribution will provide the funds we need to rebuild our Ancestral Temple, and have the entire sacred site completed in time for the August 2015 dugu ceremony. Any amount you donate will bring us closer to our campaign goal of $50,000.00 All funds received will be used to preserve our spiritual traditions by rebuilding a more structurally sound Dabuyaba, and safeguarding the entire sacred site. This is where you can help: Click on any link below for a profile of the campaign and to access the donation page - any amount you contribute from $1 is welcome.
