What is Walk a Mile in Her Shoes?
There is an old saying: "You can't really understand another person's experience until you've walked a mile in their shoes." Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® asks men to literally walk one mile in women's high-heeled shoes. It's not easy walking in these shoes, but it's fun and it gets the community to talk about something that's really difficult to talk about: gender relations and sexual violence.
Walk a Mile in her Shoes® is an international men’s march to prevent and raise awareness of sexualized violence against women. Men literally walk a mile in women’s heels to support sexual assault victims and prevention efforts. The shoes are a symbolic message. By wearing the heels it is understood of the damage caused by sexualized violence and letting people know they won’t stand for it in the community.
By participating in this march, men send the message that rape and domestic violence is unacceptable. The participating men will become allies to women who are the victims of sexual assault. Seeing men in their community speaking out against sexualized violence, victims be able to come forward with less fear.
Studies have shown it is only a very small percentage of men who commit sexualized violence. We are asking the majority of the men in our community to take a stand against this violence.
Also, men are more likely to be in a position to be a bystander to this violence. They can decide to do nothing about the violence or to take a stand against it. We want to empower the men and the community by taking a stand against violence.
