BENEFITING: Crisis Intervention & Advocacy Center
Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®: International men's march to stop rape, sexual assault & gender violence. www.walkamileinhershoes.org In honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Crisis Intervention & Advocacy Center is holding a Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® event. This one mile walk provides a playful opportunity to raise awareness and get people talking about the serious issue of sexualized violence. For preventive education, it helps men better understand and appreciate women’s experiences, thus changing perspectives, helping improve gender relationships and decreasing potential violence. For healing, it informs the community of available services. It demonstrates that men are willing and able to be courageous partners with women in making the world a safer place. Put Yourself in Her Shoes™: There is an old saying: "You can't really understand another person's experience until you've walked a mile in their shoes." Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® asks men to literally walk one mile in women's high-heeled shoes. It's not easy walking in these shoes, but it's fun and it gets the community to talk about something that's really difficult to talk about: gender relations and men's sexualized violence against women. Men are encouraged to wear high heels; official walk shoes or high heels of their choice. Men who step up and walk the walk in heels will be leaders of the walk and entered into a separate raffle with special prizes. All other participants are encouraged to register to walk in support, heels or not, and will also be entered into a raffle for general participants. This is a family friendly event and all ages are welcome! This Event will be a one mile walk around the historical downtown district of Adel, Iowa. Day of registration and check in for those already registered will begin at 9:00 am. The walk will start with a small presentation, with keynote speakers and an opening address beginning at 9:30 am. The walk will begin at 10:00 am, led by male participants who are wearing high heels followed by all other participants. The closing presentation we will start at 10:30am and it will include raffle prizes for men who wear heels and for all participants. Registration/Check-in and walk celebrations will be held at the 10th and Main Stage and Pavilion. Street parking will be available in the downtown area.
