Angela Irvin

From my earliest memories as a tiny girl, I remember feeling pain in my body. Today I realize that I was suffering from Osteoarthritis in my bones and Juvenile Arthitis, but; as a young girl walking to my parents bedroom, crying out night after night, about how different parts of my body hurt, all I understood was a mother's love as she rubbed my aching arms, legs, back, and neck, and I listened to her tell me, "I'm rubbing your growing pains away." In my early 20s, two traumatic events- a snow skiing injury and a major car accident-threw my body into Trauma Induced Spinal Osteoarthritis that left me writhing in intense, seemingly never-ending, extremely painful headaches and neck, shoulders, legs, and back pain. I lived with this chronic pain and the pain of other autoimmune diseases, until I was finally diagnosed at 35 with Spinal Osteoarthritis, Spondylosis, Spinal Stenosis, Lumbar Radiculopathy, and Vitamin B12 Deficiency. I eventually also had Lumbar Herniated Disc Surgery in my early 40s. I am an Arthritis Foundation Ambassador and Advocate.

I attended the 2016 Arthritis Foundation Annual Meeting and Conference of Champions in Denver, CO, where I spoke as part of a Small Focus Group about the impact of unreliable healthcare and health insurance that most Arthritis patients must endure in the 21st century. In December 2016, I formed my Team, "Angie's Arthritis Warriors, " to fundraise for the 2017 Arthritis Foundation Jingle Bell Run in New Orleans, LA. I am currently on a 6 week resting period, wearing a boot/brace to mobilize my right foot and diagnosed with plantar fasciitis and a stress bruise/stress injury (via my PCP) after I hurt my right ankle and right foot at some point during my travels and advocacy participation in the March 2017 Arthritis Foundation Advocacy Summit in Washington D.C. After the Advocacy Summit, I was one of over 100 Osteoarthritis patients, FDA, medical, and pharmaceutical industry leaders, who joined together to share our health stories of life with OA at the landmark Osteoarthritis Patient-Focused Drug Development Meeting, which was put together by the Arthritis Foundation because their are no current treatments or cures for Osteoarthritis.

I am from East Central Mississippi and am the reigning Mrs. Gulf States International 2017. I will compete this August in the 2017 Mrs. International Pageant, and my platform (community service/volunteer work) is 50 % of my competition score. I love the International Pageant System because of its emphasis on a contestant's platform! I am sure you can guess that my platform focuses on Arthritis Awareness! I share my Arthritis journey and stories, volunteerism and fundraising work with my platform: Angie's Adventures with Arthritis: All FLARED Up! If you are part of the 50 million adults and 300,000+ children in the U.S., who have any of the 100+ forms of Arthritis or Juvenile Arthritis, or you live with any of the innumerable Autoimmune Diseases that fall under the umbrella term of "Arthritis," you understand what a Chronic Pain FLARE feels like, just as I do--dibilitating and discouraging! Yet, we somehow overcome our FLARES, and continue on with our lives. We are Arthritis Warriors and even though we battle our diseases daily, we are STRONGER than Arthritis!!

I now have another Team "Angie's Arthritis Warriors" created to fundraise for the Arthritis Foundation "Walk to Cure Arthritis" on May 21st, 2017, in Nashville, Tennessee.
