Join Me for Community Health Network of CT’s first Walk-A-Thon to help raise money for the CHNCT Foundation’s KHAIR program!
I am seeking pledges from all friends and family for this 5 mile walk for the program that we started back in 2005.
Some of you may know the story of me going on a job interview only to find myself at an orphanage in the Hudson Valley New York where I met, read to and came to care for a group of children who had been dumped in the foster care system. Well, after having my heart torn apart by cirucmstances that were beyond my control, I drove back up the Merritt Parkway to my hair appointment at Hair's Kay Beauty & Barber Salon. When I walked in, Kay looked at me and immediately knew that something was wrong. I told her that there were approximately 30,000 kids in foster care (in Westchester County alone) and that we should do something to help these kids. She considered adopting a few and I realized that that was probably not going to happen. So, she got really frustrated and said: "Whell Sh*t, Jackie. I can do their hair. Wallah! And, that's how KHAIR got started!
One willing hairstylist....one optimistic do-gooder...both with bleeding hearts: Kay will do the hair, We will "K"are for kids: One head at a time.....
There is much, much more to this story and perhaps you will ask me to tell you the whole story, one day. But for now, I just need you to help me, help us, help the Community Health Network of CT Foundation raise some much needed dollars to keep our program going. We help alot of kids, Ummmm, excuse me....We KHAIR for alot of kids and now I am asking for you to do the same...
The KHAIR program started out with barbers and hairstylists donating their time and services to kids receiving behavioral health counseling. It has since grown to include a series of six self-esteem boositng workshops that offer life skills to teens who are suffering from emotional/physical trauma - the ones who need that extra help in order to thrive. Please read, further to find out more about what we do and how it gets done.
Why Kids Need KHAIR
Does any of this sound familiar? "I'm too tall." "I'm too short." "I'm too skinny." "If only I were shorter/taller/had curly hair/straight hair/a smaller nose/longer legs, I'd be happy." If so you know how our KHAIR kids feel about themselves. In many cases the source of these low-esteem issues derive from the environment of at risk youth.
Statistics have shown that violence, poverty, racism, poor education, health and family problems among other issues, touch many children in our communities. These issues not only hurt kids emotionally, intellectually and spiritually, but they also affect the way children feel about themselves and how they see their place in the world. KHAIR addresses these issues head on.
Making a Positive Stamp on the Lives of Kids & Families
At KHAIR, the mission is to help children by giving them the opportunity to be treated with respect and kindness, and encourage them to be the best that they can be. The program emphasizes one-on-one mentor/youth relationships combined with a range of individual and group activities, including self-concept and self-esteem building workshops. The program helps young people not only learn about grooming to improve their appearance, but it also provides positive adult role models who are successful business people and who demonstrate healthy ways to relate to others.
