The Walk for S.A.M.I. has been created in honor and memorium of Samantha Hagarty and Ryan Peters. Samantha and Ryan were amazing people with their whole lives ahead of them, but tragically could not win their battles with mental illness. Many people are still afraid to speak openly about mental illness and the effects that it has, not only on the ones suffering, but also family and friends of those struggling with this disease. We want to bring this into the light, and remove the shame and stigma that are still attached to this disease.
Samantha Diane Hagarty fought Bi-Polar Disorder and Depression, but as with a lot of people with these diseases, she started taking drugs to dull the pain and hopelessness she felt. She sadly lost her battle on February 11, 2016 when she died from a drug overdose at the age of 25.
Ryan Matthew Peters fought very deep depression from a young age, and though he sought treatment repeatedly and diligently, he couldn’t make the sadness go away. He lost his battle with this illness and took his own life on June 30th, 2016.
Through the Mental Health Foundation of West Michigan we have found a group of people who understand the pain, suffering, isolation, and stigma attached to mental illness, and want to make a difference. With their Be N.I.C.E. program, we hope to reach as many children and adults as possible, both with training and resources, to help those in need.
The Mental Health Foundation of West Michigan provides ‘Be N.I.C.E.’ and ‘Live Laugh Love’ (LLL) educational programs for schools and businesses throughout the midwest on mental health awareness, bullying and suicide prevention, and offers Mental Health First Aid certification courses. Founded in 1990, the Mental Health Foundation of West Michigan strives to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental illness and works to ensure every individual is supported in their journey to a full, healthy life by educating and building awareness throughout the community. Based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the Mental Health Foundation of West Michigan is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. By walking with us on October 2nd, your donation will help fund schools around the state of Michigan to receive mental health awareness programming. The cost for a school to receive a be nice. kit is $1500 and the cost for 1 classroom to receive LLL education is $750.

Whether you would like to walk for a friend, loved one, or even for yourself, we can't wait to get you involved. And above all else, always remember, you are not alone!!
