Kenya - Lion Census Project:

Dr. Asuka Takita and Raabia Hawa are two passionate wildlife conservationists of Asian descent that are embarking on a 600km walk to raise raise awareness and funds for elephants, rhinos and lions.

Raabia Hawa - Rabbia will be starting her 350km trek from the TANAPA (Tanzania National Parks) headquarters in Arusha ( Tanzania), she will pass through the Arusha National Park and make her way to the border at Namanga (Kenya).  She will proceed through various community conservancies along the route heading to the Nairobi National Park lion dispersal area (which is also a heavy lion conflict area) in Kitengela.  She will complete her walk at the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) headquarters in Nairobi.

All donations made to this cause will go to support the three-year Lion Census work in Kenya's two important lion habitats, Masai Mara and Coastal Region.

From hunters eager to own a lion trophy, to traders involved in the sale of lion teeth and claws as prized jewelry. Human population growth and the fight for natural spaces and resources have put the lion on the line, as it continues to run into unwelcoming humans, causing inevitable conflict, and retaliatory killing.

In Kenya's Kitengela area alone, over 20 lions have been lost to conflict in the last 5 years (7 in 2012). Last year, 30 lions were lost to poisoning and 10 lions to spearing in the Masai Mara ecosystem. These majestic cats are disappearing at an alarming rate across Africa and census work is in dire need to estimate its remaining population.

We want to establish carnivore monitoring units for population census, identification and mortality data collection system for two important lion habitat, Maasai Mara and coastal forest of Kenya. During this 350 walk from Arusha Tanzania to Nairobi June 24 - July 17, we intend to raise $369,652 to help fund the three-year budget for the two lion census projects.
