WHY ARE WE WALKIN' FOR WATER?

The lack of safe drinking water is deadly. Every day 4000 children die from easily preventable water-related diseases such as cholera and typhoid. That's one child every 15 seconds dying due to the lack of safe drinking water! Many more are suffering from diarrhea and acute stomach pains – illnesses that prevent children from going to school and growing into healthy, productive adults. Every year 3.3 million people will die from contaminated water. Each year 1.1 billion people (about 1 in 8) cannot get safe water. Nearly half of the developing world (about 2.6 billion people) lacks access to basic sanitation. There are economic consequences from the lack of safe drinking water as well. In rural areas women and girls spend hours collecting water that is dirty and parasite-laden – time that could be spent going to school and learning a trade. Safe water poverty is a worldwide problem! All of these consequences of safe water poverty are easily preventable with Water of Life filtration buckets!

WHAT IS A WATER OF LIFE FILTRATION BUCKET?

Compassion International's Water of Life filtration buckets are an effective and economical solution to the problem of safe water poverty. Using affordable, American-made technology developed for kidney dialysis, each Water of Life bucket is able to filter ONE MILLION gallons of contaminated water into safe drinking water fit for human consumption. (The average American consumes only 14,600 gallons of water in their lifetime at a rate of 8 glasses per day). The system operates by gravity as contaminated water flows down from the bucket through the filter into a clean receptacle for storage and use. The bucket and filter have no moving parts or expensive charcoal filters that must be regularly replaced, and requires no electricity or batteries. It is easily maintained! Each bucket system costs only $79! Your donation to Walkin' for Water/1,000 Bucket Challenge will go in its entirety to Compassion International to purchase the buckets, filters, and hoses, ship the equipment to the people in need, and provide the training for proper assembly and maintenance of the safe water system along with the basics of good sanitation. When a Water of Life bucket filter system is given to a family, Compassion International representatives -- usually from a church in the community -- show the recipient how to assemble and maintain the system. It's amazing that such a major health problem can be solved by such a simple and inexpensive safe water system! It's almost as if there's a miracle in every bucket!

WHAT IS WALKIN' FOR WATER DAY?

Walkin' for Water is an easy and fun 2.3 mile walk and celebration for the purpose of confronting a very serious problem plaguing many people around the world: dangerously unsafe drinking water. Safe drinking water is more essential than even food! Individuals of all ages, groups, and families will be walking to raise funds for 1,000 Water of Life filtration buckets that will provide safe drinking water for impoverished families in third-world countries. Walkers will secure financial sponsors to help us together reach the 1,000 bucket goal. We are working in conjunction with Compassion International to make the 1,000 Bucket Challenge a reality. The walk will start and finish at the lot between Kennie's Market and ACE Hardware on West King Street in Littlestown and proceed through one of the borough's neighborhoods. After the walk there will be a brief outdoor celebration worship service, followed by a free chicken barbecue for all those in attendance who have registered. Non-walkers are welcome to participate in the outdoor celebration worship service and lunch.
