BENEFITING: PLYMOUTH TASKFORCE FOR THE HOMELESS

EVENT DATE: Nov 23, 2018

DAYS TO GO: 213

Local Yokel

THE STORY:

I am being urged to summarize my year-long walk across America in 50 words or less. That's almost as crazy as the walk itself. But it may be fun to try.

I am WalkingHome and , in 50 words or so, this is why....

1. It’s going to take a year, 365 days, over 3,000 miles, and a lot of money to end homelessness in America's hometown.

2. Every day I am going to pick a flower, or collect a leaf, cup a butterfly in my hand or record the song of a bird so that, when I get back home to Plymouth I will have a ‘bouquet of America.’

3. It's a 365-piece puzzle and the picture on the box is my home. And you and you and, yes, you, are pieces of the puzzle. Every day as I walk across the country I am going to fit in one more piece: Pictures of you in your favorite chair; a recipe for the rice pudding your grandmother used to make; a bouquet of wildflowers gathered in your own back yard; the donation you make to the Task Force to End Homelessness in my hometown, Plymouth, Massachusetts.  I am WalkingHome.

4. There is no metaphor for homelessness. Someone said to me, “When you walk across the country you’ll be homeless too!” That’s not true. I will be WalkingHome. I have a home to return to. And when I get back I hope that I have raised enough money so that others do too.

5. When you realize you have a home and, even more miraculously, a hometown, you can’t help but notice others that don’t feel that connection. Like Dorothy Gale when I am walking across the country every step will remind me that ‘there’s no place like home.’

6. It should be easy. Follow me as I walk across the country and, for every mile, or every day, give a dime or a dollar to the Task Force to End Homelessness in America’s Hometown, Plymouth, Massachusetts through this Crowdrise site.

7. I’m Johnny Appleseed, in reverse. I’m walking across the country, plucking the fruit , sampling the views, wandering in the wildflowers, basking in the spirit of community. I’m greedy to hear your stories and all that I ask in return is that you support a charity that helps shelter the homeless in America’s Hometown.

8. 50 words? Can you sum up your life in 50 words? I hope not. I am going to walk across America and raise money for the homeless. But oh my God, what a wonderful adventure I am going to have.

9. To spend a year moving at the speed of conversation? To walk across America? To link the changing landscape to the different accents of those I meet along the way. How can I refuse? I can't wait to get started.

10. I feel the pull of the road, the edge of the cliff, the lure of the dark water. What is life without risk? What is commitment without uncertainty?
