BENEFITING: IMPACT INITIATIVES
EVENT DATE: Apr 05, 2015
To raise funds to benefit the children of Elohim School in Arequipa, Peru, my wife Patricia and I will be walking the “El Camino de Santiago” (St. James’ Way) in Northern Spain. We will start on April 1 and finish May 15, 2015. Through ORC's Facebook page, Twitter and Instagram we will provide photos and brief updates along the way so you can track our progress. Would you please consider being a part of this project by making a donation on Crowd Rise? Any amount will make a great difference! You can read more about Elohim School and ORC in the paragraphs below. Thank you.
The country of Peru is known for its rich cultural heritage and traditions—passed along from the ancient Inca civilization. While a number of people that live here can be considered wealthy, even millionaires—more than half of the population is living in abject poverty and almost 20% are living on less than $1 per day.
With its mountain ranges, Amazon jungle, lakes and ocean views, Peru is beautiful to behold—although you don’t have to look very far to see the slums, diseases and starvation right outside the bustling capital of Lima. For a country with so much wealth, the disparity between the rich and poor is startling.
- Approximately 11% of Peru’s children will die before they reach the age of five.
- Almost 20% of the children are forced to work as child laborers to help their family survive.
- Half the population of Peru lives below the poverty line, surviving on less than $2 per day.
- More than 570,000 orphans roam the streets of Peru with nowhere to go and no one to help them.
Helping the Children
These conditions leave hundreds of thousands of children desperately in need of care and destined to repeat the cycle of poverty.
Currently, Operation Rescue the Children, Inc. (ORC) provides an education, nutritious meals, medical care and the love of Christ to more than 500 children in Peru (www.rescuechild.org). Opportunities to work with additional children continue to present themselves and we look forward to the new children that God will be bringing into the ministry.
Where Does ORC Serve?
Arequipa: Elohim School – Distrito Mariano Melgar. A school with 250 students, 12 teachers and 3 kitchen staff providing elementary education (Kindergarten to Grade 6), pastoral care, and breakfast & lunch on a weekly basis.
Education is a critical need for Peruvian children, as it gives them a far more promising future. It has also proven to be a key to reaching beyond their residential homes, to bring opportunity and hope to children in the wider community.
Without an education, a child’s future is bleak. Frequently, lack of education condemns a child to living in the streets and sometimes to crime or prostitution. For a child without education, life can be harsh.
But an education opens up the entire world for a child. Helpless children who once were unsure of their next meal or where they would sleep at night can – with an education – dream of becoming a pilot, nurse, or educated professional able to give back to their community. The education that Elohim School provides in Arequipa enables children to grow up into the people we know God wants them to be. This is the difference Elohim School provides – and the hope an education can make.
Operation Rescue the Children, Inc. (ORC) is a faith-based organization seeking to follow the example of Jesus Christ by responding with sacrificial love to the world’s suffering children, while also working to build more just societies.
We care for the whole child by providing for the full range of spiritual, educational, social, physical, and emotional needs, believing children should have the opportunity to grow and develop to their full potential.
Because we believe in the nurturing power of the family, ORC works with and strengthens existing families to help prepare children to have healthy families of their own in the future.
ORC is committed to partnering with local churches around the world, both because it enables us to rescue more needy children, and because it helps cultivate local leadership and develop culturally- relevant, caring communities for children.
It is our strong desire that ORC be known for the integrity of our relationships, the clarity of our communication, our determined pursuit of quality, and our accountability with resources entrusted to us.
