BENEFITING: NORTH AND SOUTH RIVERS WATERSHED ASSOCIATION INC
EVENT DATE: Jun 22, 2013
Peter Kelly-Detwiler, Nik Tyack and Greg Keches have joined forces to paddle the 72-mile Wampanoag Canoe Passage this year!
Over the past four years we (along with other friends of the NSRWA) have paddled the Wampanoag Canoe Passage to raise money for the North and South Rivers Watershed Association. This year, we are joining forces to bring the event to a new level.
Peter first undertook the trip 36 years ago under the leadership of Tom Clark, Lee McKenney, and the Boy Scouts of Norwell's Troop 66, and spearheaded the 2012 trip. Nik grew up on the Third Herring Brook and helped organized the Wampanoag Canoe Passage for the years of 2009, 2010 and 2011. And Greg is one of the few others to paddle the entire 72-mile trip in recent years.
By undertaking this effort, we hope to both raise awareness of Massachusetts' beautiful rivers and also support the NSRWA in their pioneering efforts to preserve and restore the the watershed we grew up in. Recent successes of the organization include bringing river herring back to Scituate's First Herring Brook and re-opening shellfish beds on the South River.
A major goal of the NSRWA is to restore river herring habitat and river continuity to both 1st and 3rd Herring Brooks and to the entire South River. 2013 will be a pivotal year in which they hope to remove a dam on the Third Herring Brook, seek funding for dam removal on the South River and continue to rebuild fish populations on the 1st Herring Brook.
Restoration Challenge Grant - An Opportunity to Double Your Donation:
In support of the restoration of the rivers, the NSRWA has a $10,000 challenge fund from a generous donor that will match any NEW or INCREASED donations over your 2012 gift to the NSRWA.
As a $50 or more donor you will be invited to attend our Kick Off Party with a band, BBQ and beer on June 1st and $100 donors are welcome to paddle the first leg of the journey on the North River on June 22nd.
We greatly appreciate your help, and hope to see you out on the rivers!
