Rates of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) among veterans have been found to be increasing, with estimates as high as 20 percent in war veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Along with the more than 200,000 American military veterans with PTSD, an alarming number commit suicide every day. Active duty suicides in the military have jumped by 30% since 2008. Levels of domestic violence are at record levels, as is drug abuse, alcoholism, homelessness and the incarceration of veterans. Yoga science offers extremely effective tools for dealing with this crisis. Numerous studies confirm that veterans who participate in yoga (including postures, breath work, guided visualization and affirmation) show improvements in coping with PTSD and emotional challenges while enhancing their physical and mental stability. Veterans practicing yoga have reported improved sleep habits, decreased stress levels, an increase in physical and emotional flexibility, and greater self-compassion and self-esteem.
