EVENT DATE: Oct 13, 2012
Tanzania was once home to 120 distinct ethnic groups. Now there are only 5 groups living in distinct and cohesive communities: the Datoga, Hadzabe, Iraqw, Maasai, and Sukuma. Many indigenous communities in Tanzania are marginalized and lack access to potable water, healthcare, education, and economic opportunities. Consequently, these rich and dynamic cultures are in danger of being lost.
Michele first visited Tanzania while studying abroad in 2002, where she had the opportunity to stay with a family of Maasai pastoralists. After graduating from college, she returned to Tanzania as a volunteer with a non-profit organization where she spent time with the local Maasai community and furthered her understanding of their dynamic culture and the serious issues they face. During one of several subsequent trips to East Africa, Michele met Isaya Oleporuo, a Maasai community leader and the president and one of the founding members of TWO. Having worked with pastoralist groups across sub-Saharan Africa, Michele was thrilled to join the board of TWO.
Michele was inspired by Isaya's running of the London Marathon in 2008 to raise money for clean water in his village. The Hartford Marathon will be her first full-length marathon. Michele is a fiction writer and graduate student in the MFA program for Poets & Writers at University of Massachusetts Amherst, where she also teaches.
All proceeds from this fundraiser support TWO’s next project—sending a core team of volunteers to Tanzania in January 2013. The goal of this mission is to increase the participation of indigenous peoples in TWO projects, designate representatives from each area TWO works in, and scout out land for a community education center.
Individuals, organizations and businesses interested in donating should contact Michele or Isaya at email@example.com. For more information on TWO’s projects and the communities they work with, visit www.warriorsorganization.org or their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/The Warriors Organization
