Diagnosed with cancer at age 11, Taylor Matthews made it her goal to make sure that "someday no child would ever have to face cancer." Through Tay-bandz, her self-created non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness and funding research for pediatric cancer, she was able to make a very large impact in a very short time. Unfortunately, Taylor lost her incredible fight just five years after being diagnosed, and while the world lost a truly wonderful girl, we remember her for demonstrating how to be fearless in the face of even the most trying obstacles.
Taylor was one of my closest friends, and I hope that you will join me and thousands of others around the country as we show our support for Taylor and all children who are forced to fight cancer by donating and participating in WashU's Relay for Tay 5k Run/Walk on September 30 at 10:00 AM. Relay for Tay is a coordinated effort between Taylor's friends at college campuses across the country, with 10 events already scheduled. Please sign up and donate here before the event. The first 250 students to do so will receive a relay shirt at the starting line. Same day registration is also allowed with a $10 recommended donation. Unfortunately, if you are under the age of 18 you will not be allowed to run in the event.
WashU's Relay for Tay will be hosted by Sigma Phi Epsilon with 100% of the proceeds going to pediatric cancer research through Tay-bandz.
Remember to bring your waiver on the day of the event! Please meet at the front entrance to the Francis Field by 9:45 if you wish to participate.
For more information about Taylor and her organization, please visit http://www.taybandz.org/.
Hope to see you there!
