BENEFITING: KLEIWERKS INTERNATIONAL
EVENT DATE: Mar 03, 2012
HOURS PLEDGED: 500
Kleiwerks International's Women of the Americas Sustainability Initiative (WASI) is focused on supporting and engaging women, who make up 70% of the world’s poorest people and are subject to economic injustices more often than men. Equipping women with skills and leadership training in ecological design and construction not only enables them to build their own houses and community centers, providing for their immediate needs, but it also offers them an avenue for lasting independence. Training women to build ecologically, economically, and socially-just projects that serve their communities mobilizes them as a formidable force for change.
WASI is an ongoing initiative that starts with a unique yearlong program. The program includes a corps of 60 women made up of: 10 design-build instructors, 20 Global Peers who support the storytelling and development of the alliance, and 30 delegates who join in teams of two, representing 15 countries. WASI’s yearlong program kicks off with a two-week hands-on ecological design-build training convergence from March 3-17, 2012. It will be hosted in Mallin, Patagonia, Argentina at the Center for the Investigation, Development, and Education of Permaculture (CIDEP). The rest of the year will include locally-led, hands-on educational outreach building projects that will be conducted by the participating organizations and representatives in their respective communities. At least 100 people will be trained through each project.
