BENEFITING: Saha Global
EVENT DATE: Dec 27, 2016
Friends, family, and co-workers-- this would be no writing of mine without puns about public health. In all seriousness, the title of this fundraiser, "Water We Ghana Do ?", hits on a couple things I am most passionate about. If you have spent any amount of time with me, you know that the cause that brings me the most joy in this life is water: filtering it, conserving it, giving people access to it. Secondly, many of my most pivotal, challenging, and beautiful moments that formed me into someone passionate about water, happened in Ghana. I went in the summer of 2013, partnering with UPenn and KNUST in Kumasi and it changed the trajectory of my life.
Since then, I have been looking for the reason that would take me back and allow me to say “maaha” (hey) to the place and people that showed me such gracious ‘akwaaba’ (welcome). Enter Saha Global! I recently accepted a fellowship with Saha Global to travel to Northern Ghana this winter to work with women in rural communities to help create sustainable water businesses. I will specifically be working in a village with women who are willing and able to change their lives and the lives of people in their community and just need a little help. While in Ghana, I will be working with the chief of the village to agree on a need in the community, with the women of the community to see who wants to start a water business, and with my team members to construct a water purification system and monitor household usage once installed.
In the region of Ghana where I will be working, 40% of the population does not have access to clean water. That’s 2 out of every 5 people! The water being consumed is from fecally contaminated sources that animals bathe in and share. Drinking this contamination daily causes waterborne diseases that decrease quality of life and the ability to live a normal and productive life. With your help, we can change this statistic.
How will your donation help?
100% of your generous donation will go towards in-country equipment to build, monitor and maintain this drinking water system and provide the females of the village the initial infrastructure to run a profitable water purification business. With the money that you give, you will be sending me to get down and dirty and help change lives. 100% of the water businesses that have been started with Saha Global since 2008 are still fully functioning. This statistic says more than my words can. This program clearly works and I need your help to be able to implement it. Once established, the water business will provide a permanent source of safe drinking water for over 700 people.
On a global level, by giving to this fundraiser, you’re contributing to decreasing the percentage of people who don’t have access to clean water. On a trip specific level, you’re helping an entire village learn about sustainable development and changing the daily lives of people who have only ever had dirty water to drink. And on a personal level, you are helping me pursue my dreams of sustainable development and sending me to do work that makes me come alive.
Would you consider partnering with me in this life-changing work? When you give, you’re not upgrading my flight to first class. You’re providing a community with a way to make their water clean. You’re providing the chance for a young girl to want to emulate the entrepreneurial strong women in her community. You’re providing hope and health. Thank you for your time!
