THE STORY:

WATERWORKS THEATRE COMPANY INC wrote -

For 14 years, Water Works Theatre Company has been committed to enriching our community by providing the highest quality educational Shakespeare experience for young people in Royal Oak's Starr Jaycee Park every summer. Our education programs are fun, affordable, and unique; a one-of-a-kind opportunity for hundreds of students to build self-confidence while having a great time performing for friends and family.

We are asking you to donate today to help us continue to bring this impactful programming to metro Detroit's children, sustaining its growth and reach.

In 2002, Water Works pioneered the outdoor Shakespeare workshop model for children in Michigan, and we are still leading the way. Growing our nonprofit company's positive impact on our community requires sustained support.

We hire seasoned, trained theatre professionals to lead both of our education programs:

KidsAct! is for elementary and middle school students, where they discover the basics of Shakespeare, safe stage combat, dance, improvisation and scene work - all from highly skilled theatre professionals. This culminates in a free performance for family and friends.

Water Works Youth Ensemble (formerly Water Works Academy) is for high school students. In the past, students have been guided by teaching artists as they perform a one-of-a-kind piece; however, in 2015 the program was revamped to produce an abbreviated Romeo and Juliet. In 2016, the high school program is expanding to two weeks long, with award-winning director Frannie Shepherd-Bates guiding students in an abbreviated The Tempest.

Frannie Shepherd-Bates, Director of Education, brings with her ten years of working in educational theatre, much of which has been working with Shakespeare. Shepherd-Bates has also spent ten years working as a freelance director and acting coach for many of metro Detroit’s theatres, including Water Works Theatre Company, Detroit Public Theatre Planet Ant Theatre, the Abreact, and Magenta Giraffe Theatre Company, which she co-founded and managed for six years. Shepherd-Bates has received numerous honors, including the 2015 Wilde Award for “Best of the Bard” (King Lear; Shakespeare in Detroit).

We are asking you to support this program today, becoming an active part of our team. You will be providing meaningful, transformative, and FUN experiences for metro Detroit children who participate in these programs.
