We won thanks to CAAAV: Organizing Asian Communities.
After years of campaigning by CAAAV and other partners to ensure that Chinatown residents are heard in the development of the East Waterfront, the waterfront will now be developed to provide open park space at Pier 35; $14 million will be used to rehabilitate Pier 42 for community use.
This is huge at a time when NYC and Chinatown in particular is experiencing a frenzy of luxury development. The victory provides a blueprint of neighborhood planning that is accountable to residents' wants and needs (novel idea, right?)
How are we going to celebrate?
On September 8th, we will walk to celebrate this victory and to support CAAAV's work organizing Asian communities in New York City.
CAAAV (Committee Against Anti-Asian Violence) has worked for years to build the power of Asian communities in New York City so that they can impact the policies and institutions that affect their lives.
