THE STORY:

Haiti is in trouble! They need help. We can help.

Here is why they are in a precarious situation. Haiti is dependent on oil to move pretty much everything (sound strikingly familiar) - including trucked in clean water. But their infrastructure is collapsed and hurricanes will be barreling down upon them soon. Additional infrastructure may be lost, making the Feng Shui more clodded then it currently is...hard to imagine, yet a Caribbean oil spill paints an even better apocalyptic picture. I wonder if the U.S. Navy can take sluddy-port sea fuild and make it into drinkable water? An already resource strapped country facing a potential rough hurricane season needs their water resources secured!

Here is why they need help. As you can see from the little man to the left of me, he requires tons of water. Not only for drinking but for farming. He has some fruit tree and shrub planting to do in between his disaster- limited classroom time, or else the deforested hill-slide (pun) that his school (actually a tent) sits on, could come crashing down. Debris Flows, fun for geo-buffs like me, but not so nice for newly planted mango trees and half-staked tents.

Here is my approach to how we can effectively help. Help get them more accessible water - hand pumped or hand dug... or pull a few tricks out of the youtube/brainwave air. Or better yet procure a drill rig and assemble and train a Haitian crew. Yes, it may be a wet-dream, but we must utilize any means and get creative. First we need a plan, a map, and some magical green backs. Then the guiding support begins, a capacity construction approach where we coach, not dictate this mission. Instead of moving mountains we're going to secure them utilizing Haitian hands and minds. Do you notice in the picture, the little men are carrying the trees - this is the sustainable approach.

1st Project - Phase Goal: $1500

This would cover expenses for a two week water reconnaissance expedition in Haiti visiting rural orphanages around the country. I could help cover about 1 to 2 sites per day and assign a local Haitian project manager to take charge of the data collection efforts, while I coach not direct. This would allow us to locate potential well. There is a local support group, NGO, on the ground close to the Port au Prince airport which would serve as my base camp. Any additional money will keep the data collection effort going and would be beneficial to the subsequent phases of this mission.
