Help fund my friend Caroline's project to build a community water tank in her region of Kenya!

Caroline attended the International Development and Social Change program with me at Clark. She is a kind, capable leader in her community and was recently honored by the Sheila McKechnie Foundation ( She recently implemented a rainfed farm at the school she directs, a project which is now being replicated by community members.

Project Background

Caroline is working with the Sinyati women's group in the Rift Valley province of Kenya, a group formed in 1997 to address problems facing women in the indigenous Ilchamus community such as high illiteracy rates, lack of inclusion in community leadership, and poverty. The group has been encouraging women to form support groups where they can articulate their issues. As a result, women have begun holding some leadership posts and have been able to obtain funds for their children's education.
There is a social hall for community trainings, but the hall cannot currently be used during the dry season due to the lack of drinking water. The closest clean water source is over six kilometers away.

Project Objectives

The goal is to construct a rainwater harvesting tank and two pit toilets for the community social hall. The tank will hold 10,000 liters of rainwater collected during the rainy season, to be used for community events during the dry season. The group also plans to hold two capacity building workshops to train community members on causes and prevention of waterborne diseases and personal hygiene.
Fundraising Goal

The budget for this project is just $2350, with 100% of the funds going towards the raw materials needed for the construction of the tank and the toilets. All labor will be provided by the Sinyati women's group for free.

The low cost of the project means that your contribution can make a huge difference! If just 47 people give $50 each, together we can provide clean drinking water for the estimated 1200 people who would be impacted by the project.

If you cannot give anything yourself, please consider passing this request on to friends and acquaintances who might be willing to do so.

Thank you!
