The Real Story
The first question people ask me when I meet them is what is my heritage or racial background? "What are you?" is what they say. When I was young I thought I was an Indian like Pocahantas and was confused growing up in a Caucasian world. As I grew older, I began to accept and claim myself as a Philippine and yes the correct word would be Filipina, but I enjoy saying Philippine. My grandfather was part Filipino but grew up as an orphan in California and the Filipino culture was lost in my family. I am happy to have the opportunity to connect with the Filipino community and get back to my roots.
In early November of 2013, Typhoon Haiyan, also known as Yolanda, hit the Philippines displacing millions of citizens and killing over 3,000 people. The Philippines are at high-risk for typhoons. During natural disasters, finding clean water can be a challenge. Emergency water systems are portable structures that can be taken to the site of a disaster and provide clean water for those who are in dire need of relief.
Water Well Wishes has been created to raise funds to build an emergency water system in Quezon City, an area near Manila in the Philippines. Emergency water sytems help those, like my sponsor child Queen, who need a source of clean drinking water. Queen has been sponsored by me through Children International for the past year. All of the proceeds will be donated to Children International and their partner Planet Water Foundation. They have teamed together to build emergency water systems in regions where they are needed most. There is no overhead and 100% of the proceeds recieved by Children International goes toward the construction of this one system. To see photos of an installation by these organizations in the Philippines visit Planet Water Foundation's Facebook page:
It will take billions of dollars to reconstruct what has been damaged by the typhoon. Water sources are top priority in the rehabilitation of the country. Please donate now to help build the future of the Philippines.
Thank you for your contributions!
