In May this year I will be heading down to Lobitos, in Northern Peru as part of a volunteer program to aid in the humanitarian effort initiated by Waves for Development, an international non-profit organisation. Each volunteer is asked to contribute a minimum of $595 to help the program continue the work they do. All the money I raise with your help goes directly to expenses related to the WAVES programs in the communities where they serve. Examples of these expenses include educational materials, maintenance of their surf equipment and snacks for events. It also helps pay to pay their small team of staff, cover local transportation, and cover grants from WAVES International to WAVES Peru.
I will also be involved with a series of participatory audiovisual workshops that include things like teaching photography and film for an international population, as well as the young people from Lobitos. I also plan to document the experience and spread the good word of WAVES through various publications.
Who are WAVES you ask?
WAVES began in 2004 when a group of educated, local and international surfers shared a desire to help local youth with little resources enjoy surfing. Now, WAVES seeks to create life-enriching experiences in coastal communities through education programs that develop youth into healthy and empowered adults and surf voluntourism programs that engage travelers and transform their views of the world and themselves.
I would love for you to all join me on this journey, any contribution large or small will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
