BENEFITING: WAVES FOR DEVELOPMENT
EVENT DATE: Jul 08, 2015
In two weeks I have the privilege of being able to volunteer for the summer in Lobitos, Peru with WAVES for Development (http://www.wavesfordevelopment.org/). Over the past five years I have been heavily involved in my community, whether it be at school, traveling, at home or at university. I have always been passionate and fascinated by the environment and want to dedicate my life to conserving our planet in a sustainable and realistic way. I study Geography at the University of Bristol and plan on doing a Masters in Environmental Policy in order to make this dream a reality. I dedicate a lot of my spare time to ethical careers and volunteering and it is for these reasons that I wish to travel to Peru in order to educate local communities and schools about environmental ethics and sustainability. I will be working with the local school and community in order to assist in teaching a variety of classes such as surfing, art, and English, all centered around sustainability. WAVES for Development demonstrate the importance of oceans to the planet and more locally, the community. This is an interesting concept that blends surfing, tourism and ecovolunteering, all of which are not mutually exclusive. Their ethos is that surf and ecovolunteering should be sustainable and not detrimental to the local community. In this respect, the volunteers at this program enable local children to participate in a sport all the whilst learning about the waves and the ocean as well as our importance to preserving the latter. Finally, I hope to bring a chapter of WAVES to the University of Bristol in my third year.
100% of the money raised goes directly to WAVES and the local Lobitos community who are kindly accommodating us. Any donations are welcome and a report upon completion of the volunteering can be requested by anyone who is interested. Thank you to anyone who has donated, including Wills Hall who have kindly donated a grant to the cause.
