BENEFITING: PROJECT A W A R E FOUNDATION
EVENT DATE: Jan 13, 2013
Hi, I'm Maria! I will be running in the Walt Disney World Marathon on Sunday, January 13, 2013 and would like to donate to Project Aware for shark conservation.
Shark populations throughout the world have declined in recent years due to the wasteful practice of shark finning, in which live sharks are caught, their fins are sliced off, and their bodies are thrown back into the water, causing certain death to the sharks. These fins are being used primarily in parts of Asia for shark fin soup, which is considered a delicacy. The fin itself is tasteless and provides little nutritional value. As a result of this wasteful practice, some populations of sharks have declined by over 90% in the last 30 years. Because sharks produce very few offspring and reach sexual maturity at a late age, it will be difficult for them to rise in numbers again. As apex, or top, predators they are crucial in controlling the population of other species in the oceans. Please support this cause by making a donation to Project Aware, a leading organization dedicated to protecting our oceans.
