Women helping women and children in Haiti is a "We are family" project to provide help and support to women and children around the world. For about 5 years, I felt compelled to take a mission trip to visit and help orphanages in Haiti. As a single mother, the dream of going abroad to help those less fortunate in countries without infrastructure and resources seemed impossible. Living from paycheck to paycheck, the dream seemed to be further and further out of reach. Yet, knowing my own struggles, the yearning for those without jobs, clean water, food, clothing and opportunity, grew stronger. Finally, in April 2013 I had the opportunity to go to Haiti with the help of anonymous donors through my place of employment. The experience was wonderful. I was able to meet great people and see first-hand the needs of the community in Mizak, Haiti.
While on the mission trip, we provided:
• Birth kits (cloth diapers, diaper pins, socks, sleeper, infant hat, etc.) for the midwives
• Helped in building the new maternity clinic
• Led a small business seminar for a microloan program
• Led a women empowerment seminar
• Provided toys for children
• Conducted a science demonstration
• Home visits to follow-up on the care of newborns
My goal in 2014 is to go back to Mizak, Haiti to provide more seminars that motivate, inspire and encourage the women, as many of them struggle through the trials of entrepreneurship. We want to provide medical supplies for the now finished maternity clinic. We want the children to have an imagination and dream big by providing crayons, paint, coloring books and other art supplies to spark creativity. We also want to give out water filters to ensure every family has access to clean drinking water.
Funding this project will allow us to take a team of 10 women with supplies to Haiti, who otherwise would never have an opportunity to be of service in this capacity.
