EVENT: TI Education Challenge
The We Are One Youth Empowerment Program is an initiative brought into fruition by Tommy Hendrix as a skills development opportunity for High School students of low-income communities. The premiere program semester will be housed at Pedro Albizu Campos High School in the Humboldt Park neighborhood of Chicago, IL. As a twice a week, credited, Restorative Justice/Re-Engagement class consisting of 15 students that are struggling with behavior, class assignments, and attendance. The innovation behind this program, apart from the unorthodox curriculum, lies in the payment incentive of $100 stipend for each student that completes the entirety of the class/program while displaying improved leadership, behavior, grade point average, and attendance. This campaign is set into motion to assist in funding towards 15 stipends. One stipend per student that successfully completes this 6-week class/program. The power now resides within our reach to begin the process of molding the minds of the future. Let us do so with love, compassion, and understanding. W.A.O.Y.E.P. MISSION STATEMENT In a 2014 survey conducted by After School Alliance, nearly 60 percent of low-income parents cited affordability as the primary reason they could not enroll their child in an extracurricular program. The main purpose, and focal point of the We Are One Youth Empowerment Program (W.A.O.Y.E.P.) is to provide youth/young adults access to a community that promotes unity, awareness, and social development through free self-expression. Our mission will be to increase personal awareness by providing students with the platform and supplies to use their own ideas in an inter-connected environment with themselves, and their peers. Students of W.A.O.Y.E.P. will participate in a twice a week program lasting a total of 12-weeks in which they will receive a wide variety of self-development, and art workshops facilitated by guest speakers who are experts in each craft ranging from Graphic Design for Beginners, Recording Podcast, Daily Meditation, T-Shirt Design Printing, and Event Coordination. These workshops are completed in preparation for a final culminating event/graduation where students will be challenged in all five areas of Graphic Design, Recording Podcast, Meditation, T-Shirt Printing, and Event Coordination and present a final project that will represent their twelve weeks of experience in W.A.O.Y.E.P. Upon completion of the program students will receive a program certificate and a $100 stipend. What most young adults in any community really need to succeed in life is work experience, self-development, and an outlet for their ingenuity. The W.A.O.Y.E.P. is a unique opportunity set forth into motion to help accomplish that purpose.
