BENEFITING: CASA RUBY INC
We all feel an ache for change. We are all called to respond to it differently and I support any and every positive effort taken. This fundraiser stems out of my desperation at the world this month, and the aching need to do something useful.
I am creating this fundraiser to amplify my own financial contributions and as a way to challenge all of us to join together to fund the world we want. The $3400 goal is a nod to my upcoming 34th birthday and how much more important lives are than gifts and the gift of a new life that Casa Ruby provides so many people.
I've chosen Casa Ruby in honor of everyone who suffered and continues to suffer in Orlando, for the 40% of homeless youth in the US who identity as LGBTQ and for the majority of whom their identity is directly connected to why they are homeless, for the Transwomen of Color who are killed or assaulted weekly and who receive non of the media coverage or outrage they deserve. This is for everyone who has dared to live their one precious life out loud and been punished for it.
Casa Ruby is a Bilingual Multicultural LGBT Organization in D.C. providing life saving services, shelter, and programming; founded by Ruby Corado, a transgender woman who fled civil war in El Salvador at age 16 and has become a renowned speaker and activist for LGBTQ Human Rights, Immigration Equality, and Health Care Access. Casa Ruby recently purchased a new space to expand their housing offerings and is raising money to furnish it and fund all of their programs.
If this is successful I plan to organize a second fundraiser in the fall to benefit the official #BlackLivesMatter organization - a chapter-based national organization working for the validity of Black life and to (re)build the Black liberation movement.
We dream of new worlds and our hearts ache for them. Let's focus on funding them into reality!
