BENEFITING: WE HEART HARLIE & FRIENDS FOUNDATION INC
This summer I’ve been lucky enough to meet a family that has changed my definition of “selfless”. When I first met the Fields family, I immediately recognized that not only did they have special challenges in their life, but they open their arms to embrace these circumstances. The Fields adopted their children, Marvin and Cary Lynn never knowing what the future would hold, but they knew it was going to be tough with both children born addicted to drugs.
If you visit their house, you will be greeted by Noel, a very friendly great dane. Noel is a service dog in training, and is more important to this family that I will be able to put into words. Marvin and Cary Lynn have fought against a lot in their short lives. Marvin is an extremely bright 9 year old, his imagination is endless, and his joy is contagious, but this isn’t how things began for him. Marvin was born addicted to methamphetamine to a family different than the one he has now. He has multiple diagnosis’ *due to abuse he went through in the beginning of his life. The Fields family took him into their loving home at 18 months, and haven’t looked back.
Cary Lynn is four years old. She was born at just 24 weeks old addicted to heroin. She suffered a stage three brain bleed. As a result she faces many difficulties*, including a shortened life expectancy. Cary Lynn was abondoned at the hospital and was considered unadoptable. Yet, none of this scared the Fields family, they adopted her at only 9 months old.
These children have faced more odds than I can imagine. They are facing yet another challenge financially in trying to get a service dog. When trying to get assistance, they have been denied becuase they dont fit into a certain box... story of their life!
As you can imagine, this family spends a lot of time in and out of doctors offices, and since Noel has come into their life, she has made a tremendous impact. This beautiful great dane is the biggest the source of comfort for Marvin and Cary Lynn. Noel provides many life-saving services to the Fields and seems to have specialties with each child. For Marvin, she herds him and provides a calming presence. He is a runner because of his past experience, anytime he is with doctors or in an situation he is overwhelmed and frightened. For Cary Lynn, Noel is able to detect when she needs help and come and get someone. She is able to bring and carry medical supplies, and provides comfort at doctors offices and visits. Cary Lynn always has the biggest smile when she is able to reach out and touch Noel.
This family needs Noel. But $20,000 is overwhleming price tag in the face of so many other medical bills and therapies, equipment, etc. We would sincerely appreciate any amount you can contribute to help offset this financial strain.
