John Rust, Jr. is a man who has touched so many of our lives, helped us when we needed a hand, taught us life lessons, kept us laughing and surrounded us with love.
We now are presented with the [rare] opportunity to give a little of that back to him. As he continues on the road of recovery, let's surround him with support, love, encouragement, and donations to this medical fund we have set up in his honor. All donations will be used to help cover costly medical expenses from his emergency brain surgery, a second surgery to repair a leak, lengthy hospital stays, ambulance transport, etc, as well as the costly expenses he will incur as part of the life changes he needs to make going forward.
Regardless of the donation amount (EVERY bit counts), please also share favorite stories, anecdotes, well wishes, and/or anything you want to share about who he is to you. Let's really celebrate and support this guy, and keep his spirits high, especially in these continued critical healing months ahead.
Helping others and giving back has always been a priority in John's life - from his Navy service and community service, to his endless volunteer work and support of friends, family, and strangers alike. Until his sudden, recent medical challenges, he has been very active and independent.
After successfully overcoming almost of year of severe back troubles, and the challenges from a major back surgery earlier in the year, John had emergency brain surgery to remove a hemorrhaged tumor on his pituitary gland. His hospital stay was longer than imagined - they were unable to do the surgery immediately due to other complications and considerations. After a week at home, he was back in ICU where they ran more tests and found a cranial leak, pneumonia and a pulmonary embolism - resulting in a second surgery and another lengthy stay in ICU/hospital. The trauma from all this to his pituitary gland has left him with a secondary adrenal insufficiency requiring lifetime meds coordinated with an endocrinology Dr. and heightened self awareness for self-management. He also has a moderate to severe vison impairment. Loss of peripheral, blurred and double vision, not correctable with lenses. This condition has left him unable to drive, plus reading or writing (RX labels, mail, newspapers, paying bills, personal correspondence) can only be achieved using special low vision equipment. Simple tasks like personal care, cooking and laundry require training from low vision doctors, and special equipment, to accomplish. Even walking, especially outside of his home environment, is challenging and requires supervision.
Due to the severity and urgent nature of his condition and the surgeries, a lot of these services were out of network, and some not covered by his insurance - including a lot of the ongoing care and vision impairment supplies, his low vision doctors, all of the low vision aids, etc. As you can imagine this already has resulted in unexpected and enormous medical expenses, with more on the road ahead - continued tests, doctor visits, added low vision supplies/safety measures, and any aides needed at the house.
Please consider donating even a little bit to help make his recovery journey all about health, and lessen the stress of the financial impact all of this has had. John still has a long healing journey ahead of him - this fund and message board has been set up to surround him with even just a little bit of what he so freely gives.
Our sincerest thank you for your support!!
Note: All funds go to directly to John Rust Jr. less 2.9 + 10% fees charged by the site. Anything above and beyond what is needed to cover medical needs/expenses will be donated to John's preferred charity.
