BENEFITING: Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Inc.
Hi Everyone! My name is Mara Bergin and I am a competitive runner from Newburyport, MA. Below, I have posted a background story I have written hoping to describe what I am doing and what "We Run For Those Who No Longer Can" means. On August 2, 2016, for the third time, I will be racing the Yankee Homecoming 10 Mile Road Race, again in memory of My Grandmother, "Snooks", and Chris Riley, husband of Liz Crossley Riley and father of Lily, Clara, and Anna Riley. Snooks and Chris meant so much to me, as i mentioned below several times, and really pushed me to chase my passion of running in their own separate ways. When they passed away three years ago, I promised them both I would somehow pay tribute to them. Months later, I laced up my sneakers at Newburyport High, and jumped on that starting line. Along with running, I raised money for Dana Farber Cancer Institute, where Snooks and Chris were both treated. I will be doing this exact same thing this summer, but will be paying special tribute to someone new this year. This past April, Marilyn Joy passed away due to pancreatic cancer. Marilyn was the beautiful, strong, and very funny mother to one of my dearest friends, Toni Joy. Toni and I ran cross country together, and worked together on student council at school. I was fortunate enough to become close with Toni Joy during my high school years, and to live in the presence of her mom, as the xc team loved to call her "Mama Joy", for her delicious Italian food she prepared for a few of our team pasta dinners. Mrs. Joy loved our cross country team so much, and It was so obvious as she came to all of our meets and cheered us on so so so loudly (as well as my mother and others). I would like to pay special tribute to Mrs. Joy this year, by raising money for Dana Farber again, where she, Snooks, and Chris were treated. I will be also making team tshirts for all those who would like to race either the 10 Mile or 5K road race on August 2. In the past I have made the tshirts white and blue, but this year I will be making them purple, for pancreatic cancer. I will be fundraising from now until I leave for college, and will be posting a link to this group to a go-fund-me, with all donations going straight to Dana Farber. My goal is to raise double what I have raised over the past two years, making my goal of fundraising this year alone $5,000. Thank you all for your love and support, Mara.
