Did you know that 71% of teen girls in Austin feel like they don’t measure up in terms of looks, grades and relationships?
Arlette and her sister Estefanie know what that statistic feels like firsthand. “At age 13, I believed that I was supposed to look exactly the way they showed women in the magazines. I started to dislike my body. I became sick with a low self-esteem and depression.” Arlette, 10th grade
GENaustin’s sixth annual statewide We Are Girls Conference exists because girls today struggle with intense pressures that negatively affect their ability to become confident, healthy young women. Like Arlette and Estefanie, they feel alone and many of them face bullying, poor body image, disordered eating, cutting, and binge drinking.
But GENaustin and the We Are Girls Conference create a forum for girls to address these important issues and also learn tools for leadership through financial literacy, career exploration, and college readiness. In fact, at the 2012 event:
- 91% reported not feeling so alone after the conference
- 86% felt better able to connect with others
- 85% of attendees reported that experts answered their questions
Arlette and Estefanie will receive scholarships to the 2013 conference. Many girls like them cannot afford the ticket price - and it’s just $30! Please make a donation of $30 or more and turn a girl’s life around!
Because of GENaustin, the girls were able to better explore “real beauty” which made a huge impact on their lives. Estefanie shared, “GENaustin has definitely helped me open my eyes. It has given me the chance to realize how I should value myself and my body.” Estefanie, 9th grade
