MoHagani Magnetek via Crowdrise
August 11, 2015
EVENT DATE: Aug 16, 2015
Transgender people are people too. We also ride bikes and raise money to support the treatment and care of mental illness. Across all cultural, ethnic and linguistic boundaries, every group of people past and present has grappled with cures and treatments for mental health disorders. At best we have learn to cope with the torment we so often experience during crisis situations. I am MoHagani Magnetek. I have Bipolar Disorder and PTSD. Through group therapy at several treatment centers over the last five years, I have heard time again that exercise is one of the best methods to combat the anguish of many symptoms and episodes.
After my last suicide attempt in February 2015, I said I was going to give exercise and healthy living a try. I set a goal to ride my bicycle 500 miles this summer in Anchorage, Alaska. However what is a goal without a cause, I wanted to bring meaning to my rides. Transphobia (fear of transgender people) and Mental Illness Stigma are the two issues I tussle with the most when I’m riding. Yet this is not about me, I have some friends who are Transgender, Veterans, African, Alaskan Native, Polynesian, Caucasian, Asian, Lesbian, Gay, Straight and just plain ole cool. All of whom have been diagnosed with a mental illness or has a family member who does and need all the support they can get.
Not everybody has the time to a ride a bike all day when they are under a lot of stress because of life happenings. My illness is so bad that I cannot work, so I have the time to ride 100 miles for all of my friends who need help, encouragement and support. I would like to raise 500.00 and donate it all to the National Alliance On Mental Illness.
On Sunday, August 16, 2015 I plan to circumnavigate the Anchorage, Alaska bowl. With a small camera crew, we are going to film and document a ride to create a public service announcement video. I do not have a time frame of how long it is going to take me, because I am sure I will be very tired. I will take frequent breaks and drink lots of water until I reach my goal. I have never done a century ride before, so this is a big challenge for me but I am determined to raise awareness for Mental Illness and Transgender Phobias, please help me.
